Bak5 Ga1 Siang4
Hundreds of Family Surnames

The Hundreds of Family Surnames was compiled during the Song Dynasty. The pages 1a to 5a contain single character surnames whilst those from 5a onwards contain a mixture of single and double barrelled surnames. I do not know if they are all in use, or whether spare characters were reused to compose the four character lines. There are 503 different characters within a total of 568 characters of text.

Some of the characters have multiple pronunciations, and the phoneticisation is standardised here using Hong Kong Hakka. Where a character is repeated, please refer to previous lists of extra pronunciations before it, under one of the previous tables. I do not know if the character reading given in the table is the correct reading for the surname itself, or whether one of the other readings is the right one. You should treat the Bak5 Ga1 Siang4 as a character primer rather than a definitive list of Chinese surnames.

If you are interested in Chinese surnames, there is a rather good site at Chinese Roots which gives information about the origin of these surnames, and also famous personages and also other 'double barreled surnames' such as ÊF¨½ Lut5 Li1 and ¨û®] Suk5 Sun1.
