Sixty Year Cycle

The calendar is often atrributed to the Yellow Emperor ¶À«Ò (Huang2Di4), in 2637BC. The year 2000 is thus the 17th year of the 78th 60 year cycle, and is the year named ©°¨° GangChen, { ([78-1 completed cycles] x 60) + 17 = 4637 years }.

24 Agricultural Calendar Divisions

The 24 divisions are used as a guide for farming. Their position in relation to the solar calendar are thus relatively stable. The lunar year varies in length, depending on the insertion of an intercalcary month. This is why the Chinese New Year changes from year to year. It corresponds with a 19 year cycle when the date seems to repeat themselves.
