HTML - The Basics

Tweaking Text

There are a number of tags which allow you to change the appearance of the text, to form paragraphs, hard returns, indentations and highlighting and lists.

Hard Return Break and Paragraph

These two tags makes the following text begin on a new line in the browser. The difference is that the paragraph tag also inserts a space of about a line's width between two sections of text. Both these are single tags.

Mary had a little lamb<BR>Its fleece was white as snow<BR>And everywhere where Mary went<BR>The lamb was sure to go<P> Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall<BR>Humpty Dumpty had a great fall<BR>All the king's horses and all the king's men<BR>Couldn't put Humpty together again.
Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere where Mary went
The lamb was sure to go

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Bold and Italics

When you want to draw the reader's attention to a word or phrase, you can highlight it, or change the appearance of the characters. Bold and Italics are two tags that come in pairs and are ideally suited to this job.

A <B>durian</B> is a fruit. It has a hard spiky outer skin, and its yellow pulpy flesh conceals some seeds. However, many people do not like it because it has a very unusual smell.

A <I>mangosteen</I> is also a fruit which has a deep crimson semihard shell, sweet flesh with seeds.

Together they are sometimes called the <B>The <I>King and Queen</I> of Fruits</B>.

Notice that the Italic pair of tags is nested within the Bold pair of tags.
